avellaneda is the epitome of amazing coffee. located in artsy coyoacán, they produce and serve fantastic coffee. for 10 years, carlos and his cousin ximena have been perfecting their skill. from being in a punk rock band to giving his heart, carlos has solidified his name in mexican coffee culture winning top barista in the country and will be representing mexico at the world championship in boston next month (i tried asking what he plans on making but it’s a secret).

when searching google for best coffee shops in mexico city, avellaneda always came up, so I made my way there to check it out, and it definitely lived up to the hype. it’s a nice little spot with bench seating where you can sit and watch ximena and their baristas work their magic. that day I had a cortado, very very tasty.

when I decided to start my instagram page and blog, I thought why not see if they’ll want to meet up and chat, and to my surprise, they responded! I was ecstatic. carlos said he wouldn’t be there as he was out of town prepping for the championship but his partner, and cousin, ximena would be there to welcome us.

while enjoying a housemade cold brew, she was awesome and pleasant to chat with, telling us how everything started and how dedicated they’ve been from the very beginning. they went from cousins that didn’t really see each other, to an almost brother/sister relationship, even bickering about what the theme animal should be, with ximena wanting a dinosaur or dragon, to compromising with the squirrel.

i can honestly go on and on about how dedicated these two are about their product, relationship with their producers, and wanting to serve the best coffee to their customers, but you’ll just have to come visit mexico city and check it out yourself.
all the best to carlos, and the avellaneda team as the represent Mexico at the world championship!
