modus is a coffee shop and roaster based out of my hometown vancouver. i visited their shop when i was there last june, and they sent me home with a little sample bag to try when i was back in cdmx. i had a little coffee cupping session of my own, but modus stuck out because i didn’t have their bag of beans like i did the other coffee’s, so i messaged and said their coffee was awesome but i needed the bag haha fast forward a few weeks of chatting back and forth, they sent me a box of stuff, a box! not one, but three bags of coffee, a to-go keep cup with a dripper so you can literally make a coffee on the go, anddddd three sample boxes to share with local shops here in mexico. i was speechless. since i received this huge haul, i was super excited to try some, so the first bag i decided to open was hiro.

hiro is a honey processed red catuai from costa rica. the bag says that its “a refreshing surprise for its origen,” but i’ve never tried anything from costa rica so i didn’t know what to expect. it also wasn’t very specific on the taste notes which meant i was going to be put to the test, which is totally fine. when opening the bag, all i smelt was peanut butter. wow, i got really excited. throughout the whole brewing process thats all i got. then, after pouring my first cup, those notes started to subtly go away, and the cup was now bursting with fruity tastes. i can’t pinpoint exactly the fruits i was tasting, but it was really really nice. maybe strawberry or raspberry, just because it was bold, and full of flavour. i prepared the coffee with my kalita wave, which i think was the best decision, and usually when i have my first cup, i try to think of what other process this coffee would taste good in, and i couldn’t really, i think this is the best way to go.

as i mentioned, this is the first of three beans i received from modus, so follow along either through my blog, or instagram page, as i try the next two. i’ve also attached modus’ website and instagram for you to check out. if you’re in vancouver, go check em out, their hidden on west broadway by main street. it’s a beautiful shop with nice, friendly staff, and sometimes they have a food truck outside. so head over for a coffee, you’ll be glad you did!
