coffee creating culture. that’s nemesis’ slogan, but they do much more than create culture in the community, they serve awesome coffee from all over the world, one of the best cookies i’ve ever had, and i understand it all now, its because awesome, super nice owner jess, and his vision for nemesis. i was super stoked when i messaged, and he agreed to meet up for a coffee and chat.
we met up at nemesis, but he said for us to have a decent conversation, he needed to get out of there otherwise he’d be too distracted with everything going on, so we walked down to revolver, a fav of both of ours. it was almost like we walked into another one of his coffee shops, he pretty much knew all the baristas, and even some of the customers, and i can see why, he’s such a friendly guy, thoughtful, and always smiling. we shared a couple pour overs, a wush wush from gardelli’s, and a phil and seb. as we enjoyed our coffees, we chatted about how he started nemesis and why, two new locations opening soon, and plans for each one including a new slogan (sorry, can’t tell you). not only that, but exciting ideas for each location specifically, ways that you can give back not only to the hardworking baristas and staff, but to the farmers directly.
his vision, which he passes down to his staff, is that they’re not just a coffee shop, he wants to be able to tell a story every time you come in to enjoy a cup, and not just any story, but stories of farmers and producers that work extremely hard (and thats an understatement), to provide us with the best coffee possible. he wants us to know that yeah, you might be paying $5 for a coffee, but if you knew what was behind the scenes, you’d realize it wasn’t enough and want to give more. its not just a coffee shop brand he’s trying to build, its a lifestyle. not only with coffee, but anything we do in this world. sometimes we can get caught up in our busy lives, but its important to stop, and think about the worldwide picture, and if we can help just a little bit, by buying a coffee, we’re supporting those people that work so so hard.
our conversation was so pleasant, so insightful, i’m so appreciative he took time out of his busy schedule to meet and enjoy some coffee. i look forward to visiting vancouver again, but this time, one of nemesis new locations.
jess is one dope guy.
